zAKs Boardroom : Insider Info

a couple years ago, the Anchorage community was introduced to a new shop, zAKs Boardroom. well on it's way to being a successful shop it's namesake, Zak him self, tragically passed. to the benefit of the snow and skate community in anchorage, and as Zak would have wanted it, his legacy has lived on, and is thriving! Big Trav took a minute to let us in on some insider info, and remind us that there is snow on the ground in Anchorage already. scroll on down to read it.

Name of the shop? zAKs Boardroom

Name of person answering the questions? Travis mAnderson

How long has the shop been around for? what has been the secret to being successful?
We're about to celebrate our 2 year anniversary on Nov. 22nd actually. So far there's been a ton of local support which is great. I think our success so far has been mainly due to having the best crew holding the shop down, keeping a solid selection from the best companies, and supporting the local scene as much as we can with all kinds of events. I'm not saying that's the secret to success, but it's looking like it works for us.

What is your local mountain?
Alyeska in Girdwood. Best local resort around and they're actually scheduled to start up the beast on Nov. 24th. We're all wishing for sooner with all this snow lately.

Who's on your shop team?
The official snow team is Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, Gus Engle, Chris Larson, Ashley Call and a few other local riders that we support. It's growing. We also have a big skate crew coming out with a 2 year skate video after next summer. Those guys are always killing it.

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
For me and I know a lot of other people, I'd say Zak Kaercher. Not only for starting our shop, but for having the ambition and drive to make it what it is today. I also have to say Scott and Jay Liska for sure.

What is the golden age of snowboarding for you? when and why.
Golden Age? shoot... It's all about the Platinum age and that's coming up on the horizon for sure! haha
But our shop mascot, PigPig, says the golden age was '93...

BONUS Q, 1.
Is there any local brands from your area that people should be on the
look out for?
City On A Hill is on the up and up with some of the freshest designs. We're backing it

BONUS Q, 2.
What is the food/drink spot of choice that you¹d have to be local to know about?
A new spot our homies are doing called Hott Stixx is the jam. Best eats around and if you don't know, now you know... Taco King, is also something everyone needs in their lives.

and one more for good measure.
BONUS Q 3.
Hit us with some local knowledge or history.
Not everyone in AK is a fan of Sarah Palin so please quit asking about her.
