Ride Four Ever : Insider Info

when you think of Kansas how often do you think of snowboarding? well maybe it's time to start. Dillon at Ride Four Ever sent us over some insider info for the Lenexa, Kansas area.
dont wanna give his answers away, but aint it so damn true, that if you have something, you take it for granted a lot of the time... and if you dont, you cherish it. that's what snowboarding started out as... people that shared a love for something that they didnt always have the option to do whenever and wherever they wanted... and they bonded together because of it. MANY more people are snowboarding and calling themselves 'snowboarders' these days, but dont think that OG feel is gone... just think of it as a bigger fuck'n gang.

zAKs Boardroom : Insider Info

a couple years ago, the Anchorage community was introduced to a new shop, zAKs Boardroom. well on it's way to being a successful shop it's namesake, Zak him self, tragically passed. to the benefit of the snow and skate community in anchorage, and as Zak would have wanted it, his legacy has lived on, and is thriving! Big Trav took a minute to let us in on some insider info, and remind us that there is snow on the ground in Anchorage already. scroll on down to read it.

Name of person answering the questions? Travis mAnderson

How long has the shop been around for? what has been the secret to being successful?
We're about to celebrate our 2 year anniversary on Nov. 22nd actually. So far there's been a ton of local support which is great. I think our success so far has been mainly due to having the best crew holding the shop down, keeping a solid selection from the best companies, and supporting the local scene as much as we can with all kinds of events. I'm not saying that's the secret to success, but it's looking like it works for us.

What is your local mountain?
Alyeska in Girdwood. Best local resort around and they're actually scheduled to start up the beast on Nov. 24th. We're all wishing for sooner with all this snow lately.

Who's on your shop team?
The official snow team is Callan Chythlook-Sifsof, Gus Engle, Chris Larson, Ashley Call and a few other local riders that we support. It's growing. We also have a big skate crew coming out with a 2 year skate video after next summer. Those guys are always killing it.

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
For me and I know a lot of other people, I'd say Zak Kaercher. Not only for starting our shop, but for having the ambition and drive to make it what it is today. I also have to say Scott and Jay Liska for sure.

What is the golden age of snowboarding for you? when and why.
Golden Age? shoot... It's all about the Platinum age and that's coming up on the horizon for sure! haha
But our shop mascot, PigPig, says the golden age was '93...

BONUS Q, 1.
Is there any local brands from your area that people should be on the
look out for?
City On A Hill is on the up and up with some of the freshest designs. We're backing it

BONUS Q, 2.
What is the food/drink spot of choice that you¹d have to be local to know about?
A new spot our homies are doing called Hott Stixx is the jam. Best eats around and if you don't know, now you know... Taco King, is also something everyone needs in their lives.

and one more for good measure.
BONUS Q 3.
Hit us with some local knowledge or history.
Not everyone in AK is a fan of Sarah Palin so please quit asking about her.

go by, pet PigPig, and ask Travis what's up with Sarah.

Newt and Harolds : Insider Info

another amazing long time supporter of DWD, Newt and Harolds is out of Boise, Idaho. when you get out there you should check them out. here's a couple questions that Ben Woodard took the time to answer for us. if for some reason you need another reason to go to Idaho, you should go in the spring to the CDI Memorial... better yet, go now, AND in the spring. reason 2 *click here*, and 3 *clack here*.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Name of the shop? Newt & Harolds, Boise Idaho, in biz since 1985.
Name of person answering the questions? Ben Woodard, shop manager.

How long has the shop been around for? and what is the secret to it's success?
If we leaked the secret to being successful it wouldnt be a secret anymore now would it!! I will say this though, providing the best customer service possible and carrying rad brands like DWD help a lot!

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
The riders that have influenced the most people in our area would most definitely be either Jeff Tullock or Corey McDonald.

What is the best thing about working at/owning a shop?
My favorite part about workin at a shop would have to be setting a lil grom up with his/her first skate deck or his/her first snowboard set up. Seeing the excitement in their eyes reminds me of bing a little kid getting my first ride.

You¹re stuck on a mountain for the rest of your life and you can only have 1 snowboard. Is it camber, or reverse camber? Why?
If I had to pick between rocker or camber for the rest of time. I would say camber for sure. Camber just works. Rocker boards are for people that like to cheat at nose presses!

If you could guess the next big trend in snowboarding, what would it be?
The next big trend in snowboarding is back to the future hover boards and magnetic bindings.
--------------------------------

while you wait for the hover boards to drop. get yourself over to Newts and get a new set-up for the season.

Snowboard Connection : Insider Info

in the back yard of some of the mountains that helped pioneer snowboarding and pave the way for everything that we see today. built on a strong foundation, Snowboard Connection has seen it all. Rich Carlton shares some Insider Info with us.

Name of the shop? Snowboard Connection
Name of person answering the questions? Rich Carlton

How long has the shop been around for?
This is going to be our 21st winter. We've seen it all, from snowboarding being a small outsider sport, to being an event in the Olympics.

What is you’re local mountain? (when does it open usually?)
Summit at Snoqualmie and Stevens Pass are our local haunts. Both try to open every year around Thanksgiving.

Who’s on your shop team?
Pat McCarthy, Austen Sweetin, Andy Stern, Yudo, Seth Kitzke, John Shaw, Sam Roberts, Adam Willden

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
In history, Craig Kelly and the MBHC crew. As for in recent history, Pat McCarthy and Austen Sweetin.

Is there any local brands from your area that people should be on the look out for?
POW gloves are local and not widely distributed but they have a huge local following and they are getting better and better every year.

What is the golden age of snowboarding for you? when and why.
I'm 33... so slightly older than some of the kids on our staff. The newness, enthusiasm, and rebeliousness of snowboarding from 1991-1996 made me feel like I was in an exclusive tribe. Like I knew something most everyone else didn't.

Cal Surf : Insider Info

back south side for a few Insider Info's. always good for his 2 cents, this one is with Scott from Cal Surf.

Photobucket
photo courtesty garrettperry.com

Name of the shop? Cal Surf
Name of person answering the questions? Scott

How long has the shop been around for?
Open since April Fool’s Day 1988. Success mean’s different things to different people. Our success is surviving in an age of over distribution, where many of the vendors do not protect their own brands. They don’t care how their brand is sold/positioned or what type of business is selling their product. We consider ourselves successful because we have survived in spite of that fact. We are partnering with more brands that value their relationship with their retailers and believe that healthy growth does not come at the expense of their retailers. Sell to the right shops, not every shop. Sell to shops that can educate the consumer, heat mold boots, differentiate cambers/rockers/etc. We believe snowboarders should determine the future of snowboarding and we listen to snowboarders when making decisions. Our customers are our peers, so business decisions can be pretty natural as we order what snowboarders want to ride and support.

What is your local mountain? (when does it open usually?)
Hyland Hills. Opens early December.

Who’s on your shop team?
Joe Sexton, Zac Marben, Jonas, Jordan and Tara Michilot, Ricky Tucker, Dan “Danimals” Liedahl, Micah McGinnity, Nick Buchner, Danny Faye, Justin Hovde, Jamie Thomas, Dom Pomeroy, Matt Seifert, John Hodge…House of 1817 represent!

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
Micah McGinnity. Some may disagree, but he was the 1st to film locally with Mack Dawg and the Twin Cities have been a filming destination ever since. With all of the Uber Pros hitting up the local spots, it makes the local rippers step their game up and get creative.

Do you have any good shoplifter stories?
We have 2 floors in our store and typically our snowboard hard goods occupy our 2nd floor. We were very busy one day pre-season and a guy decided he wanted to score some boots. He tries a on some boots and as our shop guy goes to help another customer, he walks down the stairs and out the front door. Of course before the guy is out the door, our guy call s down and lets us know what is going on. It hasn’t snowed yet, so this guy is trying to scoot down the sidewalk in street clothes with boots on and attempting to look natural. A couple guys from the shop take after this guy and he starts to run. The thing is our staff is in skate shoes and this guy is trying to run away in boots. It was classic. We are laughing our asses off as this guy is trying to stay ahead of us. Need less to say we got the boots back and set the dude off in his socks.

bonus question:
Who is the most under rated local rider?
Danimals
------------------------------

that's in the running with Coastal Riders for best shoplifter story thus far.

The Source : Insider Info

keeping it correct.
with a # of shops that rivals the # of ships in the canadian navy, Brett Sandford from The Source in Alberta Canada, gives us a hint of how it's done.

Photobucket

Name of the shop? The Source/Sourceboards.com
Name of person answering the questions? Brett Sandford

How long has the shop been around for?
The Source is just about to celebrate it’s 20th Birthday. In human years it’s almost legal anywhere. Barely legal pretty much everywhere else.

Who’s on your shop team?
Devun Walsh, Jed Anderson, TJ Schneider, Jake Kuzyk, Mark McMorris, Nash Lajeuenesse, Kale, Stephens, Dwayne Wiebe, Raewyn Reid, Ryan Hall, Todd Williamson, Spencer Lajeuensse, Layne Treeter, Breanna Stangeland, Dave Schmidt, Loosh, Stephen Burchill, Donn Hore

Who is the most under rated local rider?
If you haven’t heard of the names on the above list, I’d say them.

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
We’re fortunate to have them on our team—Devun Walsh, Jed Anderson and TJ Schneider have been very influential over the years in these parts. On any given day in these parts you can catch a clone or two.

What is great about snowboarding right now?
Right now you’re seeing a time in snowboarding where only the most passionate are surviving—and that’s from all areas of the business to the riders themselves. People are riding, making products, selling products and marketing brands because they want do be there. It affects all parts of snowboarding—kids work harder to buy snowboards, professionals are working harder than ever for a smaller piece of the pie, retailers and brands need to be legit and get it to survive. It’s a great time to witness, everyone’s hungry again.

What is the best thing about owning a shop?
Best thing about owning a shop is being part of a Crew. We are really all a family of homies that ate stoked on everything about snowboarding an live for it non stop all year round. Its about the people, not about the money.

You’re stuck on a mountain for the rest of your life and you can only have 1 snowboard. Is it camber, or reverse camber? Why?
For sure Camber. Reverse camber is rad and super mellow and fun but when you really need your board to respond its all about camber. Just sayin.

What is the golden age of snowboarding for you? when and why.
Golden age..ha ha locking yourself into an OG Barfoot snowboard using your white Sorel winter boots…good times.

If you could guess the next big trend in snowboarding, what would it be?
Its gotta be wife beaters and yellow rubber boots…or maybe not but I’m pretty sure that’s what it will be.

Fourword Bike and Board : Insider Info

a few more than four words from Mike at Fourword in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Photobucket

Name of the shop? Fourword Bike and Board
Name of person answering the questions? Mike Lilge

How long has the shop been around for? what has been the secret to being successful?
7 years. The secret to being successful is hustling all day and night and working long hours...and I'll let you know the rest when we are actually successful.

What is you're local mountain? (when does it open usually?)
Nitehawk is our local hill. It opens when the snow dumps and stays. Other than that we drive 4 hours for the secret stash known as Powder King

Do you have any good shoplifter stories?
Our manager at the time (Geezer) and I caught a guy who stole 9 hats from us at once. He was selling candy machines for the stores and part of the proceeds went to charities so we thought he was decent. So when we found out he stole them, we went to his vehicle and confronted him. He ended up trying to take off in his vehicle, so we both grabbed him and tore him from his steering wheel while at the same time ripping his stick shift off. We threw him to the ground where Geezer then proceeded to rob him and take his wallet and his shoes. It was a role reversal of pure awesomeness. It was amazing.

What is the food/drink spot of choice that you'd have to be local to know about?
The local drink spot would be anywhere they serve Quad rye and cokes, which is everywhere. Other than that it's Maddhatters.

Hit us with some local knowledge or history.
I'm pretty sure Grande Prairie invented the Calvin Pissing on Ford sticker and any other variant those beauties could come up with.

Fat Trax : Insider Info

it's a busy time of year for shops, but Mike Lee at Fat Trax was able to make some time to let everyone in on a few things about Fat Trax and the people involved in it.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Name of the shop? Fat Trax
Name of person answering the questions? Mike Lee

How long has the shop been around for?
The first Fat-Trax openend up in 1992 up in Easthampton Ma. That location is strictly snow and is open September through April. The East Longmeadow location opened in 1998. That location is open year round with snow, skate and BMX. The one and only way we've survived this long is due to the fact we give a shit. We dont stock our shelves with cheap garbage and fuzzy fleece's. We take pride in supporting the little guys, while still keepin it real with some bigger companies. I’m also pretty excited that we (I) was the first New England shop to actually tell a certain company we weren't interested in carrying their product anymore. With all that being said, it IS getting harder and harder to keep the dream alive with the friggin' internet and mall chain stores shit staining our industry. Only time will tell.

What is you’re local mountain?
Our local mountain is this little gem located 40 south of us in Connecticut. Its called Ski-Sundown. Sunday nights are the 1 day a week when we meet up with the dudes from the other shop and all get to ride together and rage from like 6-10 at night. Its the kind of hill where you can just do laps under the lights and take bar breaks after every 3 runs and smile just as much as if we we're up at our 2nd favorite hill, Mt. Snow.

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
Man, that’s an easy one. That would be Scotty Stevens. Scott has single handedly changed snowboarding world wide. His style of riding proves that you don't need a massive budget or helicopter to have a good time and turn heads in the process. Scott has lots of fans around here. I'm definitely one of them.

Who’s on your shop team?
First and foremost, Chris Beresford. Chris has been down with us since day one. Obviously his schedule keeps him on the road filming or at High Cascade coaching, but when he's home he spends plenty of time hanging out or filling some hours at the shop, or golfing with myself, Stevens and Anderson. Then there is Mr. Austen Granger. He's been under our wing since the beginning. He also started out as an employee then flew the coop to Salt Lake City. Whenever he's home he spends plenty of time at the shop. The next OG would be Chris Grenier. Grendy’s been a part of the fam for like 7 or 8 years now. He's another one who's making a HUGE name for him self in snowboarding. Whether he's on the snow or his skateboard or even the golf course, he keeps ya laughing your ass off and asking yourself, "How the hell did he do that?". Next in line is Ben Bogart. This little powerhouse was recruited this past winter and is totally down on reppin’ the shop. He's a character for sure. We had him out here for the Think Thank premier a few weeks ago. The kids were super excited to finally meet that guy. Last but not least is our good pal Bode Merrill. He's one of the world’s best snowboarders for sure and is super down for the shop. Basically our "team" is a bunch of dudes that are already really good friends and on the up and up with their snowboard careers. Im just pumped they run our stickers and sweatshirts. We're all pretty excited to know these guys.

Is there any local brands from your area that people should be on the look out for?
Another easy one. Chris Beresford’s little brain-child. Dangshades.com, Chris has been super excited about sunglasses for many, many, years. He finally took it upon himself to start a little sunglass brand called Dang. I’m sure if you've seen any pics or edits of Chris he's probably running some of his own shades or hat's. Or if you've been to Hood you've run across his portable mini-shop at the staff sales. His blog is pretty legit and it has a store too. Check it out.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. In closing, the snowboard world would be a much more enjoyable place if everyone looked at snowboarding like DWD and Burtner see it.

thanks Mike!

if you're visiting a city, and you're a snowboarder, 9 times out of 10 you hunt down the local board shop. a shop is a snowboards 'safe place', a place of refuge. it's like an embassy that you know you will be welcome at. alternatively, if your local, it's a great meeting place to gather your thoughts, and collect the crew.
shops are the best.

we've asked all of the DWD retailers from across north america a few questions to help you gain some local knowledge and get to know the places and people that have gotten behind us. we want to thank them for their huge amount of support!

over the next couple of weeks check back here daily and pick up some Insider Info about a destination that you may travel to this winter or some history about your home town that you didn't know... and of course, just some good ol' personal opinions.

to kick it off for us is Jeff Perry at Milosport in Salt Lake City.
scroll, read, enjoy, and return daily for many more installments of Insider Info over the coming weeks.

Name of the shop? Milosport Salt Lake City
Name of person answering the questions? Jeff Perry

How long has the shop been around for?
We been a snowboard shop since 1984! Our secret of success is the fact that we try to make everyone feel like they are a part of our shop and also that there are no stupid questions.

Who’s on your shop team?
Justin Bennee, Brandon Hobush, Mark Edlund, Jon Kooley, Mikey Leblanc, MFM, Sam Taxwood, Cale Zima, Aaron bittner, Dan Brisse, Laura Hadar, Seth Huot, Blaze & Sage Kotsenburg, Jordan Mendenhall, JP Tomich, Sean Black, Chris Coulter, Brandon Hammid, Jeremy Jones (jib), Bode Merrill, Griffin Siebert, JP Walker, Matty Ryan, Bozung

What rider has influenced snowboarding the most in your area?
If you go back a ways probably Jeff Davis, he was the 1st real freestyle ripper from these parts. As far as modern snowboard trends go it would be a tie JP walker & Jeremy Jones, those 2 took the freestyle stuff they learned from Jeff Davis and took it to rails & streets changing snowboarding!

You’re stuck on a mountain for the rest of your life and you can only have 1 snowboard. Is it camber, or reverse camber? Why?
Camber for sure because I like to jump and have control on hard pack. Reverse boards are fun in deep snow but a camber board is the all around winner, it can do it all well!

What is the golden age of snowboarding for you? when and why?
For me personally its the early to mid nineties. This is the time before snowboarding was a brand name. Jamie Lynn, Noah Brandon & Terje were my hero's and style mattered a lot more then how many rotations you could do. Style was BOSS in the Nineties!

What is the food/drink spot of choice that you’d have to be local to know about?
Well its a lot more well known now but it would have to be MocaSalsa the 24 hour mexican restaurant just a couple of blocks down the hill from us. It's some good authentic and cheap food.
